Lenoir-Rhyne is a co-educational, private liberal arts institution founded in 1891. An intimate campus with a small faculty-to-student ratio, L-R embodies a unique sense of community. The campus is located in Hickory, North Carolina, a town of 37,000 in the western section of the state.

The mission of the Teaching Fellows Program at Lenoir-Rhyne College is to prepare 21st Century teacher leaders for the public schools of North Carolina who are qualified and caring professionals, who engage in personal, intellectual, and spiritual development of themselves as whole persons, and who demonstrate their fullest potential through a sense of vocation, responsibility, service, and global citizenship.

By combining the liberal arts with professional studies, Lenoir-Rhyne offers a rich foundation in the arts, humanities, social sciences, language, religion, and natural sciences -- as well as the specific skills to live a purposeful life. Lenoir-Rhyne enrolls approximately 1,600 students from across the country and around the world.

We value excellence. From the three-day freshman pre-term retreat to the senior 15-week student teaching practicum, L-R Teaching Fellows, guided by skilled experienced educators in the liberal arts and professional education coursework, experience
  • early and continuing experiences in public schools and with school-aged children and adolescents, serving as tutors, mentors, and interns through programs such as AVID, GEAR-UP, New Schools Project schools, and a CDF Freedom School;
  • global viewpoints through seminars, forums, and comparative education-focused international travel;
  • required trips to unique North Carolina schools like residential schools, experimental schools, and historic school sites;
  • a series of forum events with receptions and dinners;
  • ongoing seminars specifically for Teaching Fellows every semester;
  • meeting and interacting with award-winning children’s authors through a unique program called “The Little Read”;
  • use of contemporary technology for learning and teaching (laptop computers are be provided for each L-R Teaching Fellow and our campus is wireless);
  • leadership seminars and forums, such as Teaching Fellow “Power Breakfasts” with local leaders in business, education, and government;
  • a strong triad of support formed through mentoring relationships;
  • community-based educational projects such as “Kids In College”, a summer program for academically advanced elementary-aged students;
  • “Alternative Spring Break” service learning projects – the 2006 projects included renovating a non-profit therapeutic riding center and helping communities recover from the effects of hurricane season (such as an exotic species refuge in the Everglades and debris removal in Louisiana);
  • learning a variety of subjects through a strong liberal arts curriculum with an enriched second language requirement for Teaching Fellows including unique language options like American Sign Language, Hmong, and Spanish;
Ranked first in the state in its category by U.S. News & World Report in the 2006 annual America’s Best Colleges issue, Lenoir-Rhyne College is a great place to become a teacher!

At L-R, the Teaching Fellows Scholarship/Loan of $ 6500 per year is matched by a $6500 grant from L-R (which includes the NC Legislative Tuition Grant), resulting in a $13,000.00 scholarship. Additional financial aid awards may be added, if eligible, based on merit and/or need; scholarships from external sources may be applied to the balance. Students are responsible for the balance of fees.
