Elon University

The Elon Teaching Fellows Program is intentionally designed to prepare future teachers who think critically and embrace diversity, who are leaders within and beyond the classroom, and who will participate meaningfully in a global society. Our program involves extensive required study/travel experiences at home and abroad for academic credit, opportunities to get real classroom experience as early as your freshman year, visits to exemplary, innovative N.C. schools and a wealth of cultural and social events throughout the year. As an Elon Teaching Fellow, you will benefit from smaller class sizes and personal interaction with dedicated, student-oriented faculty members who are leaders in the profession. You will also develop strong mentor relationships with your academic advisor and your Teaching Fellows mentors.

Distinctive Opportunities
As an Elon Teaching Fellow, you will participate in study/travel enrichment experiences that include:

An American History Study Tour in winter term of your freshmen year, where you will visit pre-revolutionary war historical sites along the Eastern seaboard, such as Boston and Philadelphia. As a result of this experience, you will listen to historical interpretation and question the values and motivation of the interpreter.

A semester abroad during the spring of your sophomore year, where you will live and study in London, Costa Rica or an appropriate country if you are a foreign language major. You’ll continue your own education and also intern at local schools. You will observe similarities and differences in the teaching systems as you construct a repertoire of creative teaching methods. You will return from this experience more globally aware and cognizant of your role in a diverse and changing world. Note: Elon pays for airfare, and Fellows pay regular tuition, fees, and room charges.

Leadership experience in Washington, D.C. in winter term of your junior year, where you will participate in political science seminars at The Washington Center. You will gain an understanding of political context for and the role of media in educational decision-making. You will learn from prime-time reporters, White House personnel, and politicians about the workings of the federal government and how to become a future leader in education.

Scholarships
As an Elon Teaching Fellow, you will receive the $6,500 scholarship from the N.C. Teaching Fellows Commission, a matching $6,500 Elon scholarship and the N.C. Legislative Tuition Grant. You may be considered for additional financial assistance, if eligible. Scholarships that you have from external sources may be applied to the balance.

Degrees and Teacher Licensure
As an Elon Teaching Fellow, you have the option to graduate with licensure in elementary education (K-6), middle grades (6-9), and special education (general curriculum/dual licensure), special subject areas (K-12) in French, music education*, physical education/health and Spanish, and secondary education (9-12) in comprehensive science, English, history, mathematics and social studies.  *An audition is required for music education majors.
