Catawba College

Catawba College, established in 1851, is the sixth oldest college in North Carolina. Located in Salisbury, N.C., it is a private, coeducational, residential college of just under 1,300 students which is affiliated with the United Church of Christ. The College has deliberately chosen to remain a four-year institution rooted in the liberal arts tradition. Its purpose is to enrich the educational experiences of students and to prepare these students for productive and meaningful lives of purpose following their graduation.

Those North Carolina Teaching Fellows who choose to attend Catawba College will join a program that emphasizes quality preparation of students committed to careers as teaching professionals. Students in this program may pursue certifications in fields of study including middle and secondary language arts, history, mathematics, science, music, physical education and elementary education.

Catawba’s Teacher Education Program is open to undergraduate students regardless of race, gender, age, religion or special needs. Thanks to the quality and breadth of experience of our faculty and to the long-standing partnerships with local public and private schools, area community colleges and facilities in the private sector, Catawba’s teacher education majors have many opportunities to practice and hone their skills as teachers.

Catawba’s N.C. Teaching Fellows will participate in leadership and professional development seminars, community service, summer enrichment activities and professional conferences. Numerous opportunities for regional travel and cultural enrichment experiences are also available with stipends provided for optional international study opportunities including experiences in England, Costa Rica and Mexico.

Teaching field experiences for Catawba’s N.C. Teaching Fellows will begin in the freshman year and are enhanced thanks to a personal laptop program which trains students to integrate technology into classroom learning. In addition, Teaching Fellows will benefit from a strong mentoring program and a special emphasis on personal health and wellness.

Full tuition grants are provided to Catawba’s N.C. Teaching Fellows, including all financial aid for which the student is eligible. Room and board, books, and personal expenses are not included in the grant.

At Catawba College, the emphasis is on influencing education, one teacher at a time. To learn more, visit Catawba’s N.C. Teaching Fellows at www.catawba.edu/teachingfellows.
