Appalachian Teaching FellowsThe Appalachian Teaching Fellows program is a true extension of the excellence that has characterized teacher education at Appalachian for the past 100 years. We immerse our students in the profession of teaching through special courses, seminars, field experiences, service activities, and mentors. We have two courses taught specifically for Fellows, an educational leadership in a global society class for first semester freshmen and a class on teaching At-Risk students for second semester sophomores. We take our freshmen on an exciting three-day retreat so they can get to know each other well, develop a caring and supportive attitude toward their classmates, and get to know our Teaching Fellows’ staff. Our freshmen Fellows also live together in the beautiful Living and Learning Center along with many of our sophomore Fellows and international students. We develop a strong foundation and bond as a group and do not accept transfers. We take our sophomores to Washington, DC to visit urban schools with diverse student populations, to meet with top educational and political leaders, and to explore the many attractions in our nation’s capital. We take our juniors to an urban area each fall for a weekend of community service projects. We encourage our Fellows to have international experiences. We sponsor trips to a variety of foreign countries. In keeping with the friendly and a relaxed atmosphere of our beautiful mountain campus, we try to promote a sense of family and fun. We have picnics, field trips, special events, and a wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner/Family Day. Service activities, such as the canned food drive for the local Hunger Coalition and the December project for needy children, help to promote a sense of community involvement. Our students practice their leadership skills by organizing many of these activities through a very active student executive council. Through high performance expectations, we are not likely to let you accept less than your best. But, when things get tough, our program has caring people available to talk, listen and help. "Family" is a most important word to us. To learn more, please visit the Appalachian's Teaching Fellows Web Site at: www.teachingfellows.appstate.edu. |
