Established in 1986, the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program is the most ambitious teacher recruitment program in the nation.

500 Scholarships Per Year...
17 Campuses
One Common Goal
The average profile of a Teaching Fellow includes an SAT score over 1100, a high school GPA of 4.0 or more on a weighted scale, and a rank in the top 10% of his/her high school graduating class. In keeping with the goal to recruit males and minorities, each year approximately 20% of the program's recipients are minority, while 30% are male.

Applicant Selection Process

PHASE OUT OF THE NC TEACHING FELLOWS PROGRAM BEGINNING IN 2012-13

The 2011-2012 State Budget contains language that states the following:

“…funds are reduced in FY 2012-13 to phase out the support for this program. It is the intent of the General Assembly to support its obligations to the 2011-2012 class of Teaching Fellows and prior classes until the State’s scholarship commitment is completed.”

This means that the Teaching Fellows Commission and staff will not be implementing the application/selection process during school year 2011-2012. North Carolina high school seniors who will graduate in June of 2012 will not be able to apply for the Teaching Fellows Scholarship. We understand that this will cause a great deal of frustration and disappointment for those who had planned to apply for the Teaching Fellows scholarship this year.

We hope that legislators hear from people who care about the Teaching Fellows Program and what it has done for the image of teaching in North Carolina since 1986 and for the quality of teachers it has provided for the public schools.

Please visit this site periodically for further information. We will continue to provide applicable updates throughout the year.
