Science Laboratories
Workshop Number: 40 Presenter: Elic Senter, TF Alumnus Description: Laboratories are an integral part of the science classroom. This workshop will enable Fellows to gain tools and strategies in pre-lab, during lab, and post-lab discussion activities. Students will perform actual labs that are an integral part of the NC Standard Course of Study for science courses. Fellows will have experience working in several science areas. Fellows should dress appropriately for working with chemicals and science instruments. Time will be allowed for discussion, and other materials for use in the classroom will be provided, as will resources. Curricular Areas: Middle Grade and Secondary Science Presenter Details: Elic Senter is an Education Consultant with the North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) Center for Teaching and Learning. Elic works with professional development for educators on such topics as closing achievement gaps, differentiation in instruction, classroom management, stress relief, and improving science instruction. He also coordinates support for members of NCAE who are candidates for National Board Certification. Prior to joining the NCAE staff, Elic taught Biology and Anatomy at Wakefield High School in Raleigh, and West Forsyth High School in Clemmons. In 2003, Elic was chosen WHS Teacher of the Year, and was one of seven finalists for Wake County Teacher of the Year. He has also served as a delegate to NCAE and NEA Conventions for the majority of the time he was in the classroom. Elic has been a facilitator and presenter at every NCTF Senior Conference since he graduated as a Teaching Fellow from Elon College in 1999. He also serves as the Mayor of Franklinton.
