Math Counts!! Instruction and Learning Strategies for Grades 3-5
Workshop Number: 46 Presenter: Angela M. Upchurch Description: Participants will receive an overview of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study in Grades 3-5 Math. Correlating instructional strategies and hands on activities will be modeled for each of the 5 strands: Number and Operations; Measurement; Geometry; Data/Probability and Algebra. Both the existing math curriculum (adopted 2003) and the revised Essential Curriculum expected to be operational in 2011-2012 will be addressed. Students will receive many research-based and student-tested ideas to implement in multiple teaching settings (whole group, small group, one-on-one). Curricular Areas: Upper Elementary Presenter Details: A veteran classroom teacher to fifth and eighth grade students, Angela Upchurch is currently working as an Instruction/Learning Coach at two at-risk elementary schools in Gaston County. In this role, she enjoys working with and mentoring beginning teachers, facilitating Professional Learning Communities, developing learning units, and providing ongoing professional development for teachers and staff in the areas of curriculum and instruction. Angela received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Intermediate Education from Lenoir-Rhyne University and a Master of Arts degree Curriculum Specialist (K-12) from Appalachian State University. She also earned National Board Certification in Early Adolescence—Social Studies/History in 2001.
